Lightweight OpenXR/OpenVR desktop overlay for Wayland and X11, letting you access desktop screens and launch native apps directly in VR.
WayVR (formerly WlxOverlay-S) is a desktop overlay for VR headsets that brings Wayland/X11 screens into a VR environment and can launch applications natively inside a WayVR Wayland compositor, without needing a separate physical display. It's built to run alongside VR games and experiences with minimal performance overhead, keeping rendering and UI as lightweight as possible while remaining customizable. Interaction happens through laser-pointer-based pointer modes (left/right/middle click mapped to different laser colors), a wrist-mounted watch for quick controls, an in-VR virtual keyboard with sticky modifier keys, and an Edit Mode for repositioning and resizing overlays. It supports Monado, WiVRn, and SteamVR as OpenXR/OpenVR runtimes, includes an optional Whisper-based speech-to-text feature that runs on the user's own GPU, customizable color palettes, application favorites with launch parameters, and a downloadable skybox catalog for the OpenXR home environment. Native WayVR app mode has been tested with browsers, LibreOffice, Blender, GIMP, Inkscape, Steam, and most games (the latter requiring xwayland-satellite). It ships as an AppImage, AUR package, Nix package, or Homebrew-XR package (e.g. for Bazzite), and can also be built from source. Development and support happen through the Linux VR Adventures Discord and Matrix community.
