Free, offline voice-to-text app for Linux that lets you dictate into any application on X11 or Wayland using whisper.cpp, OpenAI Whisper, or VOSK.
Vocalinux is a GPLv3-licensed desktop app that brings voice dictation to Linux, letting you speak into any application on X11 or Wayland with fully offline speech recognition. It supports three interchangeable engines — whisper.cpp (the default, with universal Vulkan GPU acceleration for AMD, Intel, and NVIDIA), OpenAI Whisper (PyTorch-based, NVIDIA only), and VOSK (a lightweight option for older or low-RAM systems). No internet connection is required and no audio or transcribed data leaves the machine. The app offers toggle or push-to-talk activation, configurable keyboard shortcuts with any modifier combination, system tray integration with visual status indicators, voice commands for punctuation and editing, and a graphical settings dialog covering speech engine, recognition, audio, shortcuts, and advanced tuning. An interactive installer detects hardware and recommends the best engine, and the app is also distributable via Arch Linux's AUR and as a Flatpak. Vocalinux is part of the broader 'Voca' ecosystem, which includes sibling projects for macOS and Windows sharing the same offline, privacy-first philosophy.
