Back to HomeDegoogled maps and navigation for Android. Open map data with live traffic, place details and turn-by-turn routing fetched anonymously, no account, no Google Play services.
Vela Maps is a degoogled maps and navigation app for Android, described by its creator as what NewPipe is to YouTube, for Google Maps. The basemap, streets, and most places on the map are open data (OpenStreetMap, Overture Maps, and AllThePlaces), baked into tiles and shipped with the app, so ordinary browsing never contacts Google. For what open data can't cover well, search, place hours and reviews, driving routes with live traffic, and Street View, the phone itself queries Google's public web endpoints directly, anonymously, with no account, no API key, and no Vela server in between, much like a logged-out browser. Nothing is ever uploaded to a Vela backend: saved places, history, and settings stay on the phone, and a single setting can cut off all Google contact entirely, falling back to open routers and geocoders with offline maps. Extra features include Flock surveillance-camera avoidance on routes, on-device neural voice guidance and search transcription, offline maps and routing by region, public transit boards, gas prices, and Android Auto support. Built to run well on GrapheneOS and other phones without Google Play services. The project is currently in beta. It's free and open source under the GNU GPL v3.0 License.
