Swiss-based, end-to-end encrypted email service with zero-access architecture, open-source clients, and a free tier.
Proton Mail is an encrypted email service developed by Proton AG in Switzerland, built by CERN scientists in response to growing concerns over mass surveillance. It uses end-to-end and zero-access encryption, meaning messages are encrypted client-side and even Proton cannot read stored mail content only the sender and intended recipient can. Proton-to-Proton messages are encrypted automatically; messages to non-Proton addresses can be sent password-protected with self-destruct timers via Proton Mail's encryption-for-outside feature. The service is governed by Swiss privacy law, operates on a strict no-logs basis for IP addresses, and funds its free tier through paid plans rather than advertising or data harvesting. Its web, iOS, Android, and desktop clients are open source and have undergone independent security audits. Proton Mail integrates with the rest of the Proton ecosystem Proton Calendar, Proton Drive, Proton Pass, and Proton VPN under a single encrypted account, and supports custom domains, catch-all addresses, and standard IMAP/SMTP/ activation via Proton Mail Bridge for use with third-party desktop mail clients.
