Back to HomeMarkdown-based typesetting system that transforms a single source into books, papers, documentation sites, presentations, and PDFs using a powerful scripting-enabled Markdown language.
Quarkdown is an open-source document authoring and publishing platform that extends Markdown with functions, variables, scripting capabilities, and layout primitives. Designed as a versatile typesetting system, it enables developers, writers, educators, researchers, and technical teams to create academic papers, books, documentation portals, static websites, slide presentations, and printable PDFs from a unified source format. Built around the Quarkdown Flavor, a Turing-complete extension of CommonMark and GitHub Flavored Markdown, the platform introduces programmable content generation through custom functions, reusable libraries, loops, conditionals, variables, and document automation. Quarkdown supports multiple output formats including plain HTML, paged documents, interactive Reveal.js presentations, documentation websites, PDF exports, and plain text. The ecosystem includes a CLI, live preview server, project generator, REPL environment, VS Code extension, language server, and extensive standard library for layouts, charts, I/O operations, mathematics, and document composition. Quarkdown is aimed at users who want the simplicity of Markdown combined with the expressive power of traditional typesetting and publishing systems such as LaTeX and Typst.
