Open-source, low-latency voice chat software with encrypted communication, built on Qt and Opus for gaming and general use.
Mumble is a low-latency, high-quality voice-chat application originally built for gamers, comparable to TeamSpeak. It uses a client-server architecture: the Mumble client runs on Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and macOS, while the server component (mumble-server, formerly Murmur) runs on effectively any platform Qt supports, including as an official Docker image. All communication is encrypted, and the server exposes a root channel with a hierarchical tree of channels beneath it, with the ability to temporarily link channels together for larger events. Administration is handled via a hardcoded SuperUser account (password set at first run) that bypasses ACLs, or through per-channel permissions for regular users. The client supports a general-purpose plugin system, written in C for language-agnostic plugin development, allowing functionality beyond the core app (including a positional-audio framework for in-game overlays via LD_PRELOAD). Mumble is translated into numerous languages through a community Weblate project and is built on Qt and the Opus audio codec.
