Open-source self-hosted implementation of the Tailscale control server for creating private WireGuard-based overlay networks and VPN infrastructures.
Headscale is an open-source and self-hosted implementation of the Tailscale coordination and control server, designed for users who want full ownership and management of their private mesh VPN infrastructure. Built around WireGuard networking principles, Headscale enables secure overlay networking between devices using NAT traversal, encrypted peer-to-peer communication, and centralized node coordination without relying on the proprietary Tailscale control plane. The platform acts as the management server responsible for node registration, WireGuard key exchange, IP assignment, route advertisement, user separation, and tailnet coordination. Designed primarily for self-hosters, hobbyists, developers, homelab operators, and small organizations, Headscale focuses on supporting a single private tailnet environment while remaining lightweight, open-source, and infrastructure-independent. The project supports Linux-based deployments, NixOS integration, containerized builds, development builds, protobuf-based APIs, and modern Go-based infrastructure tooling. Headscale is commonly used for homelabs, secure remote access, private networking, distributed infrastructure management, internal services, development environments, and self-hosted VPN architectures as an alternative to hosted Tailscale control servers.
