Back to HomePrivacy-focused, end-to-end encrypted documents, notes, photos, and file storage service with an open-source, client-side encrypted front end.
Cryptee is a privacy-focused productivity suite offering encrypted documents, notes, photos, and file storage, similar in scope to Google Docs and Photos but with all encryption happening client-side before data ever leaves the device. Founded in 2017 by cybersecurity researcher John Ozbay, the service was built with a particular focus on people who need strong privacy protections, including survivors of domestic abuse and journalists. Documents support Markdown, KaTeX math, to-do lists, and file attachments, and the platform is accessible across desktop and mobile as a cross-platform client. Only the front-end web client is open source; Cryptee's backend remains closed, a deliberate choice the team explains as protecting tightly integrated abuse-prevention systems and reflecting the fact that verifying backend code running on a server isn't meaningfully possible anyway trust instead comes from users being able to read the open client code and confirm data is encrypted before it's ever transmitted. The client source uses an intentionally lightweight, dependency-light stack (Codekit and jQuery-style syntax) chosen for long-term stability over frequently-changing frameworks. Cryptee is based in Estonia (Svartlab OÜ) and released under the MIT License for its client code.
